Un GIS (in italiano Sistema Informativo Territoriale – SIT) è un insieme di strumenti e procedure automatiche e semi automatiche che permette di consultare, analizzare, trasformare in maniera integrata e complessa informazione geometriche e alfanumeriche georeferenziate (riferite alla terra). Esso consente di rappresentare in modo strutturato l’informazione geografica, un tempo delegata a semplici documenti cartacei (testi, carte geografiche, ecc.), e di diventare un solido strumento di “supporto alle decisioni” per l’utente finale.A Geographic Information System is a set of automatic and semi-automatic procedures that allow to visualize, analyze, process and update geometric and alphanumeric georeferenced information in an integrated and complex environment. It structures the geographic information, which some years ago was delegated to simple paper documents (texts, maps, etc..), thus becoming a strong instrument of “decision support” to the end user.
